The effect of the Super Shot on team technical and tactical performance indicators in Suncorp Super Netball

Abstract
The “Power 5” period is a critical passage of play in Suncorp Super Netball as teams can increase their scoring rates by scoring a Super Shot. This study evaluates the effect of the Super Shot rule on team technical and tactical performance indicators. Linear mixed-effects models established the effect of the Super Shot rule and period outcome (win/loss) on 13 technical and 7 tactical performance indicators for round matches during the 2023 Super Netball season. Six technical and two tactical performance indicators differed between the regular and “Power 5” periods. There is a higher scoring rate during the “Power 5” period despite conversion rates decreasing by 7% due to a higher frequency of missed goal turnovers. Teams record a higher frequency of circle connections and connections ending in the Super Shot zone during “Power 5” periods suggesting they use different strategies to create scoring opportunities. Winning teams convert possession at a higher rate and score more Super Shots than losing teams during “Power 5” periods. It is recommended that teams adopt a low Super Shot strategy at a minimum to increase their scoring rate, making shot selection and shooting accuracy pivotal to success in the “Power 5” period.
