Abstract

Literary Studies
This article explores the operations of the supernatural in two of Wood's novels: The Shadow of Ashlydyat (1863) and Dene Hollow (1871). In these texts, uncanny shadows, hauntings and prophecies are inextricably linked to the domestic sphere, ensuring that the supernatural is brought into close contact with the lives of women. As these novels reflect, Wood's supernaturalism often becomes an alternative discourse with which to express feminine desires and fears that are otherwise marginalized by rationalist discourses.
