INTRODUCTION:
The topic of discussion centres around the female athlete with respect to psychological and social issues reflected in consequent achievement behaviours. Areas of discussion revolve around perception of fear, body image, self-esteem, role modelling gender identity and society and gender relations. For the purpose of this discussion achievement behaviour is defined as those behaviours or changes in behaviours leading to sporting or training achievements and goals. The research in this area is diverse but not specific and could not possibly explain fully female behaviour in sport. Individual psychological differences take place within the context of sport both socially and historically. All these factors including the idiosyncrasies of each female are brought to the sporting environment to influence behaviour.
