Abstract

mouthbrooding catfish
Eggs and larvae of Arius graeffei and A. leptaspis were reared to the juvenile stage using plastic funnels and mesh cones to simulate the environment of the buccal cavity. Although mortality rates during early embryonic and late larval developmental phases were low, severe mortality was observed at hatching due to constriction of the vitelline blood vessels by premature rupture of the chorion. The potential of the techniques is discussed. © 1985.
