Abstract

Human Movement and Sports Science physical fitness measurement accelerometry exercise training guidelines and recommendations physical activity assessment
Introduction: There is little empirical evidence of the contribution of group exercise programs to daily physical activity requirements. This study used SenseWear Armbands to differentiate and quantify physical activity in different group exercise classes towards ACSM guidelines on daily activity. Methods: Using a crossover design, 13 males (27.9±6.3 years, 177.4±5.1cm, 78.7±4.8kg) 17 females (30.5±6.7 years, 167.5±4.67cm, 63.8±9.2kg) completed four Group Exercise classes in a randomised order over seven days. Data was collected from heart rate monitors and SenseWear-MF-SW armbands. Results: Total energy expenditure (males, females) was BODYATTACKâ„¢ (2,550.7J, 2,035.8J), BODYCOMBATâ„¢ ( 2498.1J, 1890.0J) BODYPUMPâ„¢ (1153.3J, 1112.8J) and BODYBALANCEâ„¢ (1068.2J, 713.5J). Step count was; BODYATTACKâ„¢ (5701.8, 5516.5), BODYCOMBATâ„¢ (5575.5, 5167.1), BODYPUMPâ„¢ (898.9, 747.2) and BODYBALANCEâ„¢ (719, 156.6). Average heart rate and METS were highest in BODYCOMBATâ„¢ for males (145.9bpm, 7.9METS) and BODYATTACKâ„¢ for females (144.9bpm and 7.5METS). Conclusion: All classes met ACSM's vigorous or moderate exercise intensity categories. Participants' feedback ranked the class intensity in the same order as objective measures. Both genders believe BODYPUMPâ„¢ will achieve strength and muscle tone and BODYATTACKâ„¢ will achieve reduced body fat, better coordination and aerobic fitness. SenseWear Armbands provide an objective measure to differentiate and compare outputs with ACSM recommended guidelines.
