Abstract

percutaneous coronary intervention same-day discharge nursing role
Advances in stent technology, antiplatelet pharmacology, and vascular access techniques have enabled safe same-day discharge (SDD) for patients undergoing elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) [1]. A recent systematic review confirms that SDD is as safe as overnight stays [2], while improving patient satisfaction [3] and optimising hospital resource utilisation [4], [5]. Despite these advantages, global adoption varies (0–83%) [4], [6], [7], with the UK healthcare system considering SDD the standard model of care. Conversely, adoption remains minimal in Australia [5], [8], highlighting a major opportunity to bridge the ‘know-do’ gap. This paper explores current practices with strategies to improve and their nursing implications in Australia.
