Abstract

Critiques of tourism are commonplace, but virtually all of them take either a Western or State-oriented perspective. Using exemplary Muslim, pacific and futures narratives, this essay aims to provide a diversity of views of the motivations of tourism and the development thereof. It suggests questions that need to be asked if tourism is to be more equitably planned and speculates on alternative ways in which tourism could develop in the future. © 1995.
