Abstract
Chronic disease management is the healthcare challenge of the century, as chronic disease is the principal cause of death and disability globally. In Australia, to address chronic diseases that are prevalent in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, a government-led campaign ‘Closing the Gap’ has been in place for over a decade. This campaign which aims to reduce the gap in life expectancy between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non – Indigenous Australians has had minimal success. This calls for Schools of Nursing across Australia to educate the next generation of nurses to understand why this gap exists, so nursing students can advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by supporting them to access Indigenous-specific health services.
