Preventing decay in piers of nonpressure-treated douglas-fir
Forest Products Journal, Vol.37(7-8), pp.31-34
1987
Abstract
Simulated piers were constructed of untreated Douglas-fir caps, stringers, and decking, and were protected by various combinations of methods during construction. Protection methods included: application of pentachlorophenol, copper-8-quinolinolate, fluor-chrome-arsenic-phenol, ammonium bifluoride, or boron; use of treated roofing felts between members; and kerfing to control checking. The sturctures were supported by pressure-treated piles of Douglas-tir. The members in the piers were examined over a 6-year period for checking and decay. Kerfing reduced the incidence of decay in all members. ABF, alone or in combination with a felt, and FCAP-flooded felt produced the best results. However, any of the chemicals tested would improve performance of Douglas-fir in piers.
