Policing Sexual Violence: Feminism, Criminal Justice and Governmentality
International Journal of the Sociology of Law, Vol.24(3), pp.253-272
1996
Abstract
Redefines rape as a problem of government in an attempt to connect feminism's political project with the art of government. The policing of rape is discussed in the context of the forms of governmentality that are activated through the criminal justice process, disciplining the sexual imagery of women's bodies, & public education campaigns. It is argued that to promote a novel method of policing sexual violence, the production of sexual subjectivities must be governed by the mutual production of sexual desire & ethical modes of sexual conduct. Future analysis must also consider the task of connecting sexual practices to ethical forms of sexual conduct by boys.
