Optimising breastfeeding success for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) through antenatal education: An integrative literature review
Breastfeeding Review, Vol.33(1), pp.5-15
2025
Abstract
The National Health and Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) Infant Feeding Guidelines recommend exclusive breastfeeding for thefirst 6 months which includes expressed breast milk (NHMRC, 2012), which is consistent with international guidelines (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023). Other benefits include protection against infectious diseases, gastrointestinal illness, respiratory tract and middle ear infections (victora et al., 2016). [...]breastfeeding not only has benefits for the neonate, but also for the mother as it is associated with decreased risks of developing breast cancer, osteoporosis, postnatal anxiety and type 2 diabetes (Lumbiganon et al., 2016). Given women diagnosed with GDM have additional long-term risks which can be mitigated for both mother and baby through breastfeeding, it is arguably more essential to provide tailored, targeted breastfeeding education for them. [...]we conducted an integrative review to synthesise existing literature to answer the question 'What tailored breastfeeding support and education should be provided to women with gestational diabetes in the antenatal period to optimise their opportunity to breastfeed?' METHOD An integrative review was conducted. Data analysis was then undertaken from which conclusions were drawn and the process of integration evidenced from the included information sources (whittemore & Knafl, 2005).
