Abstract

Human Movement and Sports Science swimming
The 6 x 100m race strategy step test is designed to train Paralympic swimmers to pace their main event as efficiently as possible. The six 100's are swum at a descending pace based on the swimmers best 100m time. The first four 100's are to allow the swimmer to practice pacing themselves correctly at a slower velocity and to set themselves for an efficient sixth swim. Stroke rate and time splits are recorded for the 25m intervals as well as stroke count for each 50m lap.The information will enable the swimmers race strategy to be identified and which areas of training need to be improved. Complete biomechanical race analysis of the final 100m swim can also be collected via video footage which alongside the variables above includes start time (0-15m), turn in time (flags to wall going into turn), turn out time, (wall to flags coming out of turn), finish time (flags to wall on final lap) and velocity for each 25m segment. Once the data is collected it is automatically plotted into a race analysis report giving information relating to the swimmers current race strategy for that event (stroke dependent). To improve a swimmers race strategy the aim is to reduce the drop in velocity which occurs throughout the race by improving the combination of stroke rate and distance per stroke.
