Mitigating india's housing shortage with wood-based housing
International Journal for Housing Science and Its Applications, Vol.11(3), pp.213-224

Abstract
As in many other countries, India has a rapidly growing population and, consequently, a housing shortage estimated at 24 million units. The Indian government has placed a high priority on housing and advocates the construction of 16 million units in the next 5 years. Such a plan will be difficult to achieve without modification of the labor-intensive building techniques currently used. This paper explores the market for wood-based housing in India, with particular emphasis on the use of timber imported from the United States. While there is some potential for the development of timber trade, the process will be slow and dependent on India's foreign exchange policies.
