Melbourne Branch of the Royal Mint: An overview of records pertaining to the Mint Museum collection
Journal of Numismatic Association of Australia, Vol.33, pp.7-16
2024
Abstract
A great deal of numismatic research depends on access to key sources of information, such as historical records and literature. Often these sources of information are less accessible than the physical items to which they pertain, with historical records relating to the Mint Museum collection formed by the Melbourne Branch of the Royal Mint a notable example. These records have been held by the Public Records Office Victoria since 1973 and were only viewable on-site. Having recently gone through the process to have records pertaining to the Mint Museum digitised, the goal of this article is to (1) alert readership of the JNAA that these records are now freely accessible online and (2) provide an overview of their content. In doing so, I hope to further enhance capacity of the Mint Museum collection to support numismatic research.
