Liminal space and transitions in the journey
Conversations: A Forum for Authentic Transformation, Vol.2(2), pp.18-23
2004
Abstract
This article emerges from the lives and conversations of five friends on the journey. They discuss how frightening, yet essential for spiritual maturing, liminality can be. (“Liminality” is from limen, Latin for threshold—a place between places or a point of transition where a person has been challenged to leave behind previous ways of understanding, and new structures or realities have not yet been settled.) John, in his mid-thirties, has been in ministry for more than a decade, so questioning his faith at this point is a challenging experience. Frances, Irene, Chris, and Denis—a decade (or two) along on the journey—also know something of the unsettlement of the experience of being betwixt and between. They share stories, poetry, spiritual literature, and theological reflection as a means to explore this transitional space that is both sacred and transformational.
