Health Related Quality of Life and Coping in Chronic Illness: A pilot study

Abstract
Increasing numbers of people are living with chronic illness in the Western world. Health care professionals need to focus on the quality of life experienced by these people and to learn more about how to help them cope with their illness. This study explored the relationships between coping and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in people living in the community with severe chronic illnesses. Those with a recent admission for heart failure, or who were having renal dialysis as outpatients, were recruited and asked to complete a survey which included the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (LSQ) and the Jalowiec Coping Scale. The results indicated that this group had serious loss of physical functioning and a much lower quality of life than the general population. Despite this, they used optimistic, confrontative and self-reliant coping styles the most frequently and the more they used these styles the higher their health related quality of life. Further studies need to be undertaken to assess whether health professionals should assess the coping styles used by clients with chronic illnesses. The LSQ showed utility as a measure of health-related quality of life in this group of seriously chronically ill individuals.
