Effect of incising on the strength of green Douglas-fir lumber
Forest Products Journal, Vol.49(9), pp.55-58
1999
Abstract
The effect of incising lumber to various depths was investigated for Douglas-fir that had been subjected to commercial kiln-drying but still had moisture contents ranging from 20 to 70 percent. Following treatment with chromated copper arsenate, the wood was tested to failure in bending. Bending properties declined significantly with increasing depth of incision, but the reductions were far smaller than those found in an earlier study that used dry lumber. Within the moisture range tested in this study, moisture content at time of incising was poorly correlated with changes in strength.
