Early evacuation is the best bushfire risk mitigation strategy for south-eastern Australia
Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Vol.61(3), pp.481-497
2017
Abstract
Given the large and increasing bushï¬re threat to lives and property in Australia, thereis a need for economic evaluation of risk mitigation policies that can be implementedby governments and homeowners. Three broad policies applicable for existing at-riskcommunities are evaluated: expanded use of landscape-scale prescribed ï¬re; homeignition zone treatment (bushï¬re defence sprinklers); and early evacuation when abushï¬re is burning on extreme or catastrophic ï¬re danger days. Early evacuation is theonly option that yields net economic beneï¬ts relative to existing policy.
