Distinction or extinction: Stepping towards a middle years model for survival
Australian Journal of Middle Schooling, Vol.6(1), pp.11-17
2006
Abstract
This paper focuses on establishing a framework for identifying a 'distinct' nature of middle schooling. Using previous work and research to assist in establishing a need for 'distinctiveness', the paper suggests that much of the debate surrounding the nature of middle schooling can be informed by a model incorporating previous frameworks with a view to adding contemporary neurological findings. In the past decade a great deal of research has provided neurological foundations for delineating what many educators have intuitively known or observed through various lenses; middle school students are typically undergoing many significant developmental changes that accompany the onset and duration of adolescence. The newest research available to educators and policy makers suggests that middle school programs can indeed make a case for being distinct and as such must develop pedagogical and didactic initiatives encompassing neurological considerations.
