Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) has received significant attention in the educational arena for some time, with acceptance in schools, tertiary institutions and continuing professional development. Due to the relatively low demand in the mapping sciences area, resources have not previously been directed towards the development of CAL packages. The receipt of two research grants in 1989/90 and 1993/94 provided the opportunity to formulate two projects with the aim of developing CAL materials on remote sensing. This paper examines two facets: (1) the motivation behind the development of CAL software; and (2) some of the design considerations and challenges associated with the development of CAL modules. These aspects are examined from the perspective of the authors who have experience in using and creating CAL software for remote sensing instruction.
