Developing Practice that Enhances Cultural Connection for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Young People Transitioning from Care

Abstract
Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander young people who are transitioning from care face a range of challenges that can include loss of connection to culture, desire for reunification with family of origin, community and country, yet receive limited support to do so. They often have extreme difficulty accessing culturally safe, appropriate, and affordable housing. In Queensland up to one in two young people are homeless within the first five years of exiting care, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders seven times more likely to become homeless than non-Indigenous people. Homelessness along with a raft of other life experiences can seriously impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their capacity to fulfill their potential, and have a positive quality of life strong in culture and with family, community and kin. This article outlines an Indigenous led and culturally informed set of strategies developed through participatory action research in a Queensland transition from care service, strategies based on appreciating the strengths of culture, and the value of promoting cultural connection, identity and attachment.
