Abstract
Purpose – This paper examines the performance efficiency in terms of student success rates of Australian Universities.
Design/methodology/approach - The data was obtained from the online reports of the Australian Department of Education for the year 2016. The records of the year 2016 were the most complete for the variables being tested. The DEA model used student success rates as the output, student staff ratios, attrition rates, and retention rates as inputs.
Findings/ Results - The results highlight a moderate level of difference between universities with 5 achieving the highest level of efficiency (as represented by a rate of 1) and the remaining with levels of efficiency ranging from 0.839 to 0.973.
Originality/value - The paper provides some evidence that the key variables attrition, retention and student to staff ratios are useful in relationship to successful completion rates.
