Contemporary Tourist Trends and the Need for Transformative Education in Australia's Northern Territory
Australian Journal of Hospitality Management, Vol.7(2)
2000
Abstract
This paper argues that Australia's current training courses in tourism and hospitality need to be better equipped to accommodate contemporary trends in the tourist market. Courses need to keep pace with a pro-active approach to adapt changes imposed by the internal and external tourist and hospitality business environment. By comparing the structure and content of courses of National Training Packages offered by institutions in the Northern Territory, Australia, with a 1998 survey of backpackers in Darwin(1), Australia, the authors conclude that the growing economic importance of the backpacker market, its characteristic demands and ways of servicing them, are not reflected in current course offerings. The study of transformative tourism should be considered as an integral part of contemporary hospitality and tourism programs leading to a positive change in attitudes and values among those who provide experiences to tourists
