Abstract

Curriculum and Pedagogy assessment of delineation of psychopathology medical students
Medical students used the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) to delineate psychopathology presented in a videotaped interview with a patient, and the scores they assigned to the patient were compared to those assigned by 4 faculty members. No significant correlation was found between the correctness of the BPRS scores assigned and Ss' scores on an examination related to the diagnosis and management of the same patient. In addition, the correctness of BPRS scores was unrelated to Ss' general psychiatric knowledge, as assessed by written and oral examinations, or to Ss' overall academic ability. Findings indicate that it may be premature to use standardized rating scales in the assessment of students of psychiatry. (11 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
