Abstract
The effect of perioperative medication (local and general anaesthetic agents, steroids and antibiotics) on white blood cell populations, and specifically to monocyte and dendritic cell immune profile and apoptosis is of particular interest. The impact of these other external modulators of the immune system is important when considering changes to immune cell numbers and function during intraoperative cell salvage (ICS) and allogeneic blood transfusion (ABT). To generate a more complete measure of the immune response it is important to evaluate both monocyte and dendritic cell numbers and function.
