A study of five regional towns in Australia: Tourist's and resident's perceived destination images
Tourism, Vol.51(4), pp.387-401
2003
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of five complementary studies of residents and tourists which were carried out in the towns of Charters Towers, Hughenden, Innisfail, Mareeba and Port Douglas. The aims of the studies were to: identify the existing image that tourists and residents leaders have of their towns, to identify and analyse those image factors of a town which tourists and residents use to form their image, and to understand more fully the differences/similarities in town image as perceived by tourists and residents within each town and across all towns surveyed. These studies have shown the nature of the image that residents and tourists have of a number of small towns in Queensland. The results show that there are a number of similarities with the primary image of the towns with only minor differences apparent. If this is shown with further studies, it suggests that local councils and their professional advisers may be reasonably certain that they have the same image of the town as their visitors and residents.
