Examines how Julie Taymor’s “Across the universe” uses Beatles songs to link the youth of the 1960’s depicted in the film with youth of the 2000’s in the audience, and thus link the Vietnam war with the Iraq War. Discusses the power of film musicals to perform utopian functions that can unite an audience into a community. Asserts that “Across the universe” accomplishes this goal by combining nostalgia for the past with a reimagining of the present.
