Forestry is being redefined to meet a broad range of economic, environmental, and social expectations in many countries, including Australia. A notable feature of this process is the increasing importance of farm forestry development in government policy and programs. However, farm forestry is still in its infancy in Australia, and there has been little analysis to date of the implications of the federal and state governments' current policy. The principal farm forestry policy also appears to be focused on plantation expansion at a national level rather than the delivery of broad socioeconomic outcomes for regional communities. In this article, the author provides an overview of the policy context in which farm forestry development occurs, raises what appear to be important issues for prospective small-scale growers, and suggests an alternate basis for developing a national farm forestry policy in Australia.
