A Perspective on the National Health Goals and Targets Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer Implementation Groups
Health Promotion Journal of Australia, Vol.4(3), pp.24-27
1994
Abstract
Recent efforts to integrate disease prevention and health promotion into the Australian health care system are evident in the work of the Better Health Commission in the mid-1980s, and more recently in the "Pathways to Better Health" project and the National Health Goals and Targets. In 1993 and early 1994, Implementation Groups for National Health Goals and Targets took part in preparing a framework and documentation, and advising on professional and public consultations. Elements of the work of the Cardiovascular Disease and the Cancer Implementation Working Groups are described from the point of view of the Public Health Association of Australia's representatives on these two groups. The goals and targets framework, and the strategies within it, provide some worthwhile opportunities for initiatives on the part of health promotion practitioners and researchers.
