Abstract

Individuals identify with a community to fulfil the need to belong, creating a sense of safety within the ingroup. The grouping of individuals within broader society creates an opportunity for politicians to gain political power by discursively constructing social hierarchies. The institutions of politics and media hold a unique and significant power over public discourse that facilitates the development of a public language, one that empowers men and constrains women. The aim of this research is to analyse the political and psychological methods men in power employ to reinforce and reproduce male hegemonic power.
