Abstract

first person narrative
'The Little Man' is a novel that primarily uses a child observer, although the novel is located very much within contemporary adult realist fiction. The story has been based upon, and structured around, fragments of workshop-based creative wrtiting exercises, and developed into a sustained piece. The central research question that the novel investigates is "What advantages (and limitations) are provided in structuring the narrative in the move from writing with multiple narrators to a single narrator?" 'The Exegesis Concerning Little Man' provides a genre study of contemporary adult realist fiction, specifically aimed at researching how other creative practitioners have been able to sustain narrative structure to ensure plot unity and verisimilitude. Furthermore, the exegesis investigates the thematic reasons for restructuring the fragments from multiple narrators to a single narrator. The exegesis then provides an account of the process of the narrative structuring undertaken in the writing of 'The Little Man'.
