Abstract

Moreton Bay prawns seafood value chain analysis supply chain management
The seafood industry in Australia is in serious decline with more than 70% of all seafood imported. The prawn industry in particular is suffering from intense competition from farmed imports, rising fuel prices and stagnant prices. In an attempt to reverse the fortunes or slow the demise of the commercial prawn fishery, Supply Chain Management has been suggested as a possible tool to assist in improving profitability and viability. Supply chain research has been seen to improve efficiencies and effectiveness in other agri-food supply chains but has yet to be applied or documented in the context of the Australian fresh seafood industry. The research question addressed by this study is: What are the barriers to and opportunities for improving profitability in a fresh seafood supply chain in Australia?
