Abstract
The inclusion of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in secondary education institutions is a common agenda worldwide. Students and governments are placing pressure upon educators to include these technologies into classrooms. Educators are generally faced with the demand while operating in an environment of fiscal constraint, limited infrastructures, poor technical assistance and limited professional development. The capabilities of the Internet create the opportunity to redesign educational ICT projects to better meet government and student demands while addressing educator concerns. This study focuses on the development of a software suite that enables the production of an internationally coordinated student Internet magazine. Coined EDVance, a combination of the words education and advance, the creative project illustrates a translation of educational processes, including writing, research and assessment, into a digital format. This exegesis first examines the literature surrounding educational ICT projects, revealing a worldwide emphasis on adopting 21st Century Skills and ICT into educational curricula, while illuminating the problems often encountered by educators involved with these types of projects. The research further examines usability solutions employed within the commercial sector for inspiration in the redesign of an online student magazine. The result yields the EDVance project, discussed as the main body of the exegesis. The EDVance project is an online software suite which enables students to undertake research and writing processes online, engage in international peer editing, and automates the magazine publication process - all whilst facilitating digital record keeping for assessment purposes. The sources of inspiration behind various features and functions are described in context throughout the main body of the exegesis. Other student web magazines are also reviewed, providing a framework in which the EDVance project may be viewed. Finally, the research concludes with an overview of the various functions of the EDVance project that could be extended in the future, as well as presenting several avenues of research worthy of further investigation.
