Abstract
This thesis attempts to address the lack of academic research concerning the production ecology of children's television in India. It makes an important contribution to new knowledge by examining the globalising activities of The Walt Disney Company in the Indian subcontinent, and the impact of those activities on the local screen production ecology, and on national cultural representation. The research is significant because of the dearth of industry-focused studies of children's television undertaken in India, and because of its engagement with industry practitioners through the use of semi-structured interviews. Further, this research project has also been undertaken by an industry practitioner: I have drawn on my professional experience and networks developed during my career in the UK pay-TV sector, including working for Rupert Murdoch's Sky TV and The Walt Disney Company in undertaking this study. During my television career I developed an interest in the localising strategies used by Disney as it expanded across new territories, and in how each territory's channel nonetheless developed a distinctive local flavour, particularly The Disney Channel in India.
