Abstract
Background: Undergraduate nurse students are required to undertake a minimum 800 hours of work integrated learning experiences throughout the Australian Bachelor of Nursing program. Assessment of these placements is critical, yet they are known to be complex and challenging. The Australian Nursing Standards Assessment Tool (ANSAT) was developed in response to these known complexities and has been used since its inception in 2014 in many Australian universities for clinical assessment of students’ practice and learning.
Aims: To explore the experiences of the clinical facilitators who use the ANSAT for the assessment of students’ clinical practice during their work integrated learning experiences.
Methods: Nine semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with clinical facilitators at a regional Queensland multi-campus university.
Findings: Thematic analysis of the findings identified that there are three interconnected themes that represent the experience of the study participants and highlight issues associated with using the ANSAT. The themes are knowledge of the ANSAT, assessment process in practice and preparation and training.
Discussion: The issues and challenges that affect the assessment process are multifactorial. The results of this study confirm ongoing challenges around consistency of interpretation and use of the ANSAT; preparation and training are key to addressing these challenges.
Conclusion: WIL assessments are well documented as being one of the most complex assessments a registered nurse will undertake. The conclusions from this study indicate there is value in investing in training and education of clinical facilitators to promote standardisation and consistency of nursing students’ WIL assessments.
