Abstract
This study explored inclusive education and examined the use of subject-specific and special education collaborative approaches to teaching and learning in a secondary school in southeast Queensland. The study sought to identify the perspectives, practices and experiences of teachers who collaborated in cross-disciplinary teams as they attempted to address the requirements of their students with disability, and how they worked with specialist learning support teachers in their school. Using a revelatory case study methodology, this study aimed to better understand the perceived efficacy of collaborative team teaching for students with disability.
Four key themes emerged from the analysis. These were collaborative relationships, differentiation and adjustments for inclusion, engagement in learning and social cohesion. Within collaborative relationships, the importance of communication, attitudes and adaptability were found. Teachers shared that differentiation and inclusion for students directly, positively influenced engagement in learning with fewer behaviours. Collaborative teaching partnerships were perceived by teacher to lead to social acceptance and inclusion. The impact of this is that positive collaborative teaching partnerships can assist students with disability find their place within school. The building of capacity and skills through the opportunity to access support in classrooms provides for social cohesion.
