Abstract
"The Smell of Him" is a chapter exeprt from my Doctoral thesis (by creative artefact), a fictional work which explores the poetics of narrative as an aesthetic representation of melancholy. "The Smell of Him" is an adapted character that is representative of an early working draft of the thesis. Specifically, "The Smell of Him" demonstrates the development of a melancholy aesthetic via the development of character and setting in relation to thematic explorations of 'loss', a central aspect of contemporary psychoanalytical understandings of melancholy.
