Abstract
Research Background
The representation of space and depth on a two-dimensional surface is a problem that has long fascinated artists and art historians. Western art’s privileging, from the Renaissance onwards, of perspectival space was unsettled by Modernist artists who disrupted longstanding conventions, paving the way for artists to render space differently, fostering new ways of seeing. This research considers the work of four contemporary artists who ‘paint space’ in diverse ways from illusionistic naturalism to pure abstraction. It examines how and why they render space in a particular manner, responding to specific experiences and environments, as well as broader questions concerning ecological impacts, colonisation and the creative process.
Research Contribution
The research contributes to understandings of ways in which illusions of space can be employed to evoke experiences of place, internal landscapes and states of imbalance. It builds understandings of how creative processes can be employed to generate notions of paradox and tension through an interplay between qualities of two-dimensionality and three-dimensionality, surface and depth. The research also provides fresh interpretations and analysis of the work of established and emerging Queensland artists.
Research Significance
The research is significant in its explication of the artists’ diverse explorations of space. Recognition of excellence is evidenced by its presentation with the accompanying exhibition at a prominent venue, Caloundra Regional Gallery, and by an invitation for the author to present the research via a public talk at the exhibition opening. The exhibition received almost 2000 visitors and was accompanied by a suite of well-attended public programs.
