Abstract

Historical Studies Italian history
History has always had an emotional subtext, but the habits and methods of the discipline, and the idea of the eminently subjective character of emotions, have meant that historians have often left the study of emotions to experts in other fields. In recent decades, however, interdisciplinary collaboration, with the consequent fading of traditional disciplinary boundaries, together with the developments in feminist historiography and oral history, have encouraged a growing interest of historians for the diachronic study of human emotions. The celebrations of 150 years since the unification of Italy represents an excellent opportunity to introduce a new field of research, but also to suggest new perspectives from which to examine the history of Italian politics, focusing on the relationship between emotions and power. The book considers essential stages in Italian national history: the revolution of 1848-1849 and the Risorgimento, the political events of the early twentieth century, Fascism, Republican Italy, and Italy today. The essays collected in this volume reflect on the role of emotions in the life of the Italian nation, in an attempt to show not only the emotional character of politics, but also the political nature of emotions.
