Spoken Communication Strategies Used by Learners of Japanese in a Foreign Language Learning Environment
Doctor of Philosophy, University of Queensland
2010
Abstract
Research into language learning strategies over the past 30 years has provided many insights into how good language learners facilitate the language learning process. Much of this research has indicated that the use of language learning strategies facilitates mastery of a second language. However, few studies have targeted learners of Japanese in a foreign language learning environment. Even fewer studies have targeted spoken communication strategies in such an environment. The overarching purpose of this thesis was hence to provide insights to students, researchers and educators about the spoken language learning strategies used by JFL students in a foreign language learning environment. At the same time the results of this study will encourage instructors of Japanese to expose students to a variety of language learning strategies in order to better facilitate language learning in and outside of classrooms.
