Abstract
In Australia the labour participation rate for people aged fifty to sixty-four years is much lower than that in other member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), including Japan, Sweden, the United States and New Zealand. A recent government report noted that, if Australia had the same mature-age participation rate of New Zealand in 2012, the gross domestic product (GDP) in Australia would have been 4% higher. Studies into the reasons behind Australia's low participation rate found age discrimination and negative stereotyping of older people can adversely affect the ability of mature age people to participate in the workforce. To address the issue of an ageing population and the low participation rate of older people in the workforce due to age discrimination, the Federal Parliament enacted the Age Discrimination Act 2004 (Cth) (the Act). The Act prohibits direct and indirect age discrimination in areas including work. Despite the Act workforce participation rates of mature age people have not increased significantly since 2004.
