Abstract
This thesis addresses the following questions : Why are trust based strategic alliances used in the New Zealand wine industry? How are trust based strategic alliances managed in this industry? A qualitative, case study based approach was chosen, as current theory is pre-paradigmatic, with integrated models of the rationale for and management of trust based strategic alliances being largely absent. Twelve winery case studies have been written, with seven over-performers and five under-performers. Within-case and cross-case analysis has been undertaken to explore the reasons for differences in performance and identify the managerial issues of this type of structure, using the models of Grant (1998), Varadarajan and Cunningham (1995) and Bretherton and Carswell (2001).
