Abstract
The red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis (phylum Rhodophyta, class Florideophyceae) is a widespread marine macroalga that in recent years, has been the target of significant research into its environmental, health, and economic applications. In particular, A. taxiformis produces a range of secondary metabolites and other natural products that underlines its relative importance. However, similar to other rhodophytes with limited available genetic resources, the genetic mechanisms that drive its metabolic pathways remain poorly investigated. Thus, the aim of this PhD research was to develop genetic resources and investigate the metabolic pathways and regulatory elements of rhodophytes, including A. taxiformis. We further aimed to develop tools to utilise these resources to further facilitate future research into rhodophyte genetics and metabolomics.
