Abstract
This thesis focusses on utilizing ecomusic as a medium for intergenerational transmission of ecological sustainability values and practices through the development of the ‘Ecomusic Toolkit for Teachers’. Understanding the musical milieu that constitutes the field of ecomusic provides a basis for understanding how ecomusic can shape the future. By melding epistemological dimension of music and environmental education, the thesis illustrates how ecomusic programs can be used by learning facilitators who use music to stimulate an interest in nature through school-based music curricula.
By using an experiential learning framework, the ‘Ecomusic Toolkit for Teachers’ allows each student the opportunity to build their own connection with nature. Using songwriting as a narrative discourse, the students are then able to articulate this connection. This then provides an artistic platform for transformational change for each individual and, by sharing with the broader school community, change in others.
This research lays the foundation for music students who would aspire to further their careers as ecomusic artists by providing advice for professional performing artists through an informative array of artefacts which include an exemplary music album of original pieces. An auto ethnographical approach is used to illustrate key aspects of transformative events framed within transpersonal psychology.
Music can act as a catalyst for social transformation and, as such, can service the needs of a sustainable, healthy planet.
