Abstract
Football is the most popular sport in the world. As such, performance analysis (PA) in elite level football has become an increasingly important component of the football coaching process. However, there are problems with current PA approaches, such as limitations in the methods used, the lack of a clear conceptual base for PA, questions surrounding the utility of outputs for coaches, and a substantial gap between the methods used in research, and those used in practice. This thesis is a direct response to these limitations, and involves applying and extending existing analysis methods used in the discipline of Human Factors (HF), typically applied in non-sports domains, to PA in football.
