Abstract
Professional sport is a complex sociotechnical system, involving multiple actors participating in a billion dollar industry. Technology is used to enhance safety, physical and cognitive performance, improve training and coaching regimes, and to support officiating. One facet of sports systems that is currently experiencing significant levels of technology insertion and redesign is Officials in Sport (OiS) which includes the umpires and referees who control the game. Historically, when the performance of officials has been questioned, it was almost exclusively based on their ability to make an accurate decision under pressure in a high stakes situation.
