Abstract
This research responds to a call from the nursing profession for a robust pedagogical framework to assist in guiding simulation learning events. It sought to understand nurse educator and learner perceptions of simulation and how various factors influenced the pedagogy of simulation. The question 'What are nurse educator and learner perceptions of factors that influence the pedagogy of simulation in pre-registration nursing education?' was used to elicit information about simulation pedagogy. This led to the development of a framework that would assist in guiding simulation design and implementation. Interpretive Description (ID) methodology with semi structured interviews were used to collect data from nurse educators and pre-registration nursing students. Nine experienced nurse educators representing Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, and 11 learners from three universities in Australia participated in this enquiry. Data analysis used constant comparative analysis, a reading frame and schematic diagramming. Six key concepts including pedagogy, milieu, approach, physical, psychological and fidelity came together to form a conceptual model. This is presented as a framework, Sim-MAPP that can be used to inform simulation design and integration in pre-registration nursing curricula. The findings of this research highlight that the environment in which the education is delivered, the availability of resources including experienced staff, choosing a modality that fits the learning outcomes, adequate preparation and/or orientation for participants, the cognitive and emotional level of the participants and the level of fidelity required for the situation, are critical to successful implementation and learning in simulation based education.
