Abstract
Silencing the Voices: Exploring Female Sexuality & Desire through Young Adult Literature' seeks to explore how sexuality - not solely sexual orientation, but rather the emotional understanding of sexual attraction, desire, and intimacy - can be expressed in young adult literature in an age of technological communication where young people are encouraged to 'come of age' online. The focus is on normalising female desire with the intention to explore 'discourses of desire' (Fine and McClelland 1998, 2006; Tolman 2002, 2012; Lamb 2010) with an emphasis on healthy female sexuality while addressing the sexual double standard still prevalent in contemporary society. Combining two linear story lines, Silencing the Voices explores the use of sexting and the impacts of nude imagery going viral, as well as the developing sexual relationship of the protagonist told through her perspective in diary excerpts.
