Abstract
Due to advances in treatment and early detection, most people who are diagnosed with a gynaecological (GYN) cancer survive. Consequently, there is now an estimated 4 million people living with the aftermaths of GYN cancer globally. A well-established survivorship issue relating to GYN cancer diagnosis and treatment is the impact on sexuality and quality of life. Young gynaecological cancer survivors (YGCS) are particularly at risk of a poor sexual quality of life (SQoL). Yet, evidence-based interventions dedicated to the SQoL of YGCS remain scarce.
In this thesis, existing research has been explored in detail and then complemented by in-depth qualitative research exploring the question: “How can we move YGCS towards greater sexual quality of life?” This thesis presents a pragmatic, salutogenic and person-centric approach to a) establishing the risk and protective factors of SQoL, b) identifying the strategies acceptable to YGCS to protect or improve SQoL, and c) developing an intervention approach to guide YGCS towards greater SQoL.
