Abstract
Sedentary behaviour (SB) is a relatively new area of public health, which has been deemed a public health issue in recent years due to its negative association to public health outcomes. SB includes activities such as screen time, studying, reading, and more, which are conducted in a seated or lying position. However, little is known about the SB patterns amongst adult aged university students. University students are at risk of accumulating high levels of SB, particularly because of their academic requirements (e.g., attending classes and studying) to complete a tertiary degree. It may be important to identify and modify these potentially unhealthy behaviours within this population group as a public health priority. Therefore, this thesis investigated university students’ SB across various domains of sitting and explores effective behaviour change strategies that can be put in place, to reduce SB in a university environment.
